Manually Adjusting SmartByte Speed Limits (Slow Internet)

Some users have indicated that SmartByte slows their Internet connection.

When SmartByte loads for the first time, it conducts a speed test. It then saves those values as your maximum available bandwidth speeds to best determine when to throttle applications and services that are not latency-sensitive, to make sure your latency-sensitive applications and services work quickly and correctly.

If there is an issue with connectivity at the moment of the test, such as poor wireless signal strength or wireless radio interference, SmartByte may record speeds that are slower than what your connection can provide. In these cases, the best remedy is to manually adjust the speed limits in SmartByte’s settings by following these steps:

  1. Click Start
  2. Type Smartbyte and click SmartByte when it appears.
  3. Once the interface has loaded, press the F4 key on your keyboard to load the settings page.
  4. In the settings page, you will see the current bandwidth settings. You can change these by clicking on them and replacing the number with the appropriate speed, in megabits per second (Mbps). You can use the rates stated in your Internet service provider’s plan, or you can use an online speed test, such as speedtest.net. If you elect to use a speed test, make sure you first change the speeds in SmartByte to something far higher than your actual plan so that the current settings do not limit speed.

Please do not confuse this with megabytes per second (MBps). As a general rule, Internet service providers and online speed tests communicate in megabits per second (Mbps) while Windows and applications that transfer files communicate in megabytes per second (MBps).

  5. Once you have changed the numbers appropriately, click Save Settings. You can now close the SmartByte interface, as the user interface does not need to be loaded for SmartByte to its job of speeding up your Internet experience.
  6. If manually setting your speed limits does not resolve the issue, we suggest updating to the latest version of SmartByte by clicking here.
